The Worm Farm...

This year our homeschool group split the term's up into themes and this Term's theme was 'Earth'... so last week at our homeschool meeting Dianne (A homeschool Mum) organised lots of science stations with different activities based around earth and water (Water was the theme for last term). To finish the morning off each family got to make a worm farm - simply using a large glass jar, layers of sand & soil and mesh for the top - oh and of course worms. To say Pernella was excited is an understatement!



My girl is just crazy about creepy crawlies!



These worms will be great in my vegetable garden once we get it up and running...





So this week there has been lots of observing of our new pet's, feeding them and researching about looking after worms on the internet. This weekend Pernella and Charlie are going to be making a larger worm farm using an old fish tank we have.

Salt Lapbook

Well this is our first lapbook for the year.


(You can't really see it but on the word 'SALT' they sprinkled salt on the wet paint)




I saw it on Hearts and Trees blog as part of a kit, but then saw that Amanda was selling the lapbook by itself... Very well priced, easy to print off, with great instructions on how to do the experiments and put the lapbook together... I was one very happy customer!

I thought the Pernella & Charlie would really enjoy doing the salt experiments....
and they did.

This science project was a huge success - and a lot of fun!

Our volcano activity

What better way to finish off our volcano unit than to make a model volcano of our very own. We used a plastic container and put our volcano in the middle, along with dry leaves, rocks, grass and some of Pernella's dinosaurs strategically placed by Pernella herself... The kids were just happy making the model and didn't realize that we were going to make a mess... oops I mean lava!

After half filling the cup inside the volcano with vinegar the children added some red food colouring.

and then I told them to add a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and they looked on in amazement as their volcano errupted.

The kids decided 'heh let's make the lava blue, then green,' etc, etc....
well why not....
